Whether you\u2019ve already begun your automation journey or just thinking about starting one, consider these three steps you\u2019ll need to take to automate successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/www.resourcepro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ReSource-Pro-Rethinking-Automation-for-Insurance-Organizations.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-take-a-crash-course\">1. <strong>Take a crash course<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding automation at a high-level may not be necessary, but it&#8217;s helpful to know some of the basics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In insurance, we commonly utilize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resourcepro.com\/blog\/insurtech-101-rpa-and-automation-in-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">robotic process automation<\/a>\u00a0(RPA). This technology automates repeatable and routine tasks by simulating key strokes and mouse movements based on a series of rules, just as a human would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, automation has different designations based on the degree to which it involves humans, and you will often hear the terms \u201cattended\u201d and \u201cunattended\u201d when the technology is discussed. \u201cAttended\u201d means that a human does one part of the work and a bot does the other, whereas \u201cunattended\u201d means that the bot can complete the task on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, different technologies can be combined with RPA in order to streamline processes even further. For instance, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resourcepro.com\/blog\/insurtech-101-pros-and-cons-of-in-house-and-off-the-shelf-ocr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">optical character recognition<\/a> (OCR), another AI-driven technology which extracts text from images and scanned documents, in tandem with RPA to populate spreadsheets and other digital documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.resourcepro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/basic-3.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34416\" width=\"371\" height=\"209\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-prepare-your-workforce\">2. <strong>Prepare your workforce<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For employees, automation can be a confusing if not frightening prospect. Be prepared to explain to your people how their jobs will change: for the better. Bots aren\u2019t replacing humans, but rather taking over repetitive tasks so that humans can focus on higher level work. While bots typically handle low level tasks, they\u2019re still prone to error. What happens if a bot does something incorrectly, but no one notices in time to fix it? You could have a costly E&amp;O incident on your hands. This means that having a human in the loop is critical to any successful automation project, not just because bots can break, but because they need to be updated too.
